Stage 1 – Page 2 : Particle Motion vs Wave Motion (JEE Core Thinking)
1️⃣ Particle Motion ≠ Wave Motion
One of the most misunderstood ideas in wave mechanics is confusing particle motion with wave motion.
| Particle Motion | Wave Motion |
|---|---|
| Local oscillation | Disturbance propagation |
| Particles do not travel far | Energy travels long distance |
| Velocity changes direction | Wave speed is constant |
JEE Rule:
Never assign wave velocity to particle motion.
2️⃣ Motion of a Particle on a Transverse Wave
In a transverse wave on a string:
- Particle oscillates perpendicular to wave direction
- Motion is simple harmonic motion (SHM)
- Each particle has same frequency but different phase
If wave equation is:
y(x,t) = A sin(kx − ωt)
Then particle at fixed position x = x₀ performs SHM:
y(t) = A sin(ωt + constant)
3️⃣ Velocity & Acceleration of a Particle
For a particle executing SHM in a wave:
v = ∂y/∂t = −Aω cos(kx − ωt)
a = ∂²y/∂t² = −ω²y
- Maximum velocity = Aω
- Maximum acceleration = Aω²
JEE Trap:
Particle velocity ≠ wave velocity (v = fλ).
4️⃣ Phase Difference Between Particles
Particles separated by distance Δx have phase difference:
Δφ = (2π / λ) × Δx
- Same phase → Δx = nλ
- Opposite phase → Δx = (2n+1)λ/2
- 90° phase difference → Δx = λ/4
5️⃣ Energy Transport in Waves
Each particle oscillates, but energy flows along the wave direction.
- Energy ∝ A²
- Higher amplitude → more energy
- Frequency does not affect energy directly
For waves on string:
Power ∝ A² ω² v
6️⃣ Medium Determines Wave Speed
Wave speed is independent of:
- Amplitude
- Frequency
- Phase
Wave speed depends on:
- Elastic properties of medium
- Inertia of medium
Golden Rule:
Change medium → speed changes → wavelength changes → frequency remains same.
7️⃣ Common IIT/JEE Conceptual Traps
- Assuming particles move with wave
- Using v = fλ for particle velocity
- Thinking energy depends on frequency only
- Confusing crest motion with particle motion
8️⃣ Visualization Tip for Exams
Always imagine:
- Horizontal arrow → wave direction
- Vertical arrow → particle oscillation
This instantly removes 50% conceptual errors.
🧠 Stage-1 Thinking Upgrade
- Freeze x → analyze particle SHM
- Freeze t → analyze wave shape
- Separate kinematics from propagation
