World Grasslands – Geography Notes (UPSC Prelims + Mains)
Physical Geography | Environment | High-Scoring Topic
Introduction
Grasslands are one of the major natural vegetation types of the world, characterized by vast open areas dominated by grasses with very few trees. These ecosystems are found in regions with moderate rainfall, insufficient to support dense forests but adequate to prevent desert formation.
Grasslands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and contributing to global agriculture and livestock activities.
Types of Grasslands
Grasslands are broadly classified into two types:
- Tropical Grasslands (Savanna): Found in regions with high temperatures and seasonal rainfall.
- Temperate Grasslands: Found in mid-latitude regions with moderate climate and lower rainfall.
Global Distribution
- Prairies: North America (USA & Canada)
- Steppes: Eurasia
- Pampas: Argentina (South America)
- Veld: South Africa
- Downs: Australia
Key Features
- Dominance of grasses with minimal tree cover
- Moderate rainfall (25–75 cm annually)
- Seasonal climate variations
- Highly fertile soils in temperate regions
Importance of Grasslands
- Support large-scale agriculture (especially wheat)
- Ideal for livestock farming
- Act as carbon sinks, helping in climate regulation
- Provide habitat for diverse wildlife species
Major Challenges
- Overgrazing leading to land degradation
- Desertification in dry regions
- Impact of climate change
- Human encroachment and urbanization
Exam Perspective
- Location-based questions (very common)
- Match the following (Grassland ↔ Region)
- Concept-based (climate, soil, vegetation)
Understand Concepts • Score High in Geography
