Electrostatics – Stage 0 (Foundation)
Chapter 1: Electric Charges & Fields – Page 6
1. Two Fundamental Forces Compared
Nature has many forces, but at the basic level, two long-range forces are:
- Gravitational Force
- Electrostatic Force
Stage-0 Insight: Both forces act without physical contact and follow inverse-square law.
2. Mathematical Comparison
Gravitational Force:
Fg = G · (m₁ m₂) / r²
Electrostatic Force:
Fe = k · (q₁ q₂) / r²
- Both ∝ 1 / r²
- Constants differ enormously
3. Strength Comparison (Very Important)
Consider two electrons separated by the same distance.
Fe / Fg ≈ 10³⁹
JEE Gold Fact: Electrostatic force is 10³⁹ times stronger than gravitational force.
4. Why Don’t We Feel Electrostatic Force Daily?
Even though electrostatic force is extremely strong, we don’t feel it because:
- Most objects are electrically neutral
- Positive and negative charges cancel out
- Gravitational force always adds (mass is always positive)
Conceptual Clarity: Neutrality hides electrostatic force at macroscopic scale.
5. Attraction vs Repulsion
A key difference:
- Gravity → Always attractive
- Electrostatic force → Attractive or repulsive
IIT/JEE Angle: Presence of repulsion leads to equilibrium and stability in matter.
6. Role in Structure of Matter
Electrostatic force is responsible for:
- Binding of electrons to nucleus
- Formation of atoms
- Molecular bonds
- Mechanical strength of solids
Deep Insight: Matter exists because of electrostatic force, not gravity.
7. Distance Dependence – Common Trap
If distance between charges and masses is doubled:
- Gravitational force → 1/4
- Electrostatic force → 1/4
JEE Trap: Students confuse magnitude difference with distance dependence.
8. Units Comparison
- Charge → Coulomb (C)
- Mass → Kilogram (kg)
- Force → Newton (N)
Reminder: Units remain same, only constants differ.
Stage 0 – Page 6 Takeaway
- Both forces follow inverse square law
- Electrostatic force is enormously stronger
- Neutrality hides electric force
- Electrostatics governs atomic structure
