Electrostatics – Stage 0 (Foundation)
Chapter 1: Electric Charges & Fields – Page 7
1. The Problem with “Action at a Distance”
Earlier, we said charges exert force on each other even without contact.
But this raises a serious question:
“How does one charge know another charge is present?”
Critical Thinking: Force acting instantly across empty space is physically unsatisfactory.
2. Newton vs Field Concept
In Newton’s time, forces were treated as:
- Instantaneous
- Direct interaction
Modern physics rejects this idea.
IIT-Level Shift: Forces act through a medium called a field.
3. What Is a Field? (Very Basic)
A field is a region of space where a force can be experienced.
Example:
- Gravitational field → due to mass
- Electric field → due to charge
Key Idea: Source creates field → field acts on test object.
4. Electric Field – Conceptual Definition
An electric charge modifies the space around it.
This modification is called the electric field.
Electric Field exists even if no other charge is present.
JEE Gold Line: Electric field is a property of space around a charge.
5. Why Electric Field Is Necessary
Consider this sequence:
- Charge Q is placed
- Space around Q gets modified
- Another charge q enters this region
- q experiences force due to field
Important: Force is not direct Q → q interaction. Force is field → q interaction.
6. Cause–Effect Chain (Very Important)
Correct Physical Picture:
Charge → Electric Field → Force
JEE Trap: Never say “charge directly pulls another charge”.
7. Field Exists Independently
Even if no test charge is placed:
- Electric field still exists
- Field stores energy
- Field carries momentum
Advanced Insight: Field is a real physical entity, not imaginary.
8. Analogy for Clear Understanding
Think of a stretched rubber sheet:
- Heavy ball → creates depression
- Another ball → rolls due to depression
Similarly:
- Charge → creates electric field
- Test charge → moves due to field
Visualization Tool: Always imagine space being modified.
9. What Electric Field Is NOT
- Not a material substance
- Not visible
- Not dependent on test charge
JEE Mistake: Students think field appears only when test charge is placed.
Stage 0 – Page 7 Takeaway
- Action at a distance is incomplete
- Field is the correct physical explanation
- Electric field exists independently
- Force acts via field, not directly
