Current Electricity – Stage 1 (IIT–JEE Core)

Page 9: Kirchhoff’s Laws (KCL & KVL)

1️⃣ Why Kirchhoff’s Laws?

When circuits become complex (multiple loops, junctions, mixed sources), Ohm’s law alone is not sufficient.

⚠️ JEE Reality:
Most multi-loop problems in JEE Main & Advanced are solved only using Kirchhoff’s laws.

2️⃣ Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL)

Statement:
At any junction, the algebraic sum of currents is zero.

Mathematically:

ΣI = 0

Meaning:

  • Current entering = Current leaving
  • No charge accumulation at a junction

3️⃣ Physical Basis of KCL

KCL is based on conservation of charge.

If charge were to accumulate at a point, current would become infinite — impossible.

4️⃣ Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL)

Statement:
The algebraic sum of potential differences around any closed loop is zero.

ΣV = 0

Interpretation:

  • Total energy gained = Total energy lost
  • Based on conservation of energy

5️⃣ Sign Convention (Very Important)

While traversing a loop:

  • Battery from − to + → +V
  • Battery from + to − → −V
  • Resistor in direction of current → −IR
  • Resistor opposite to current → +IR

⚠️ JEE Trap:
Wrong sign convention gives correct-looking equations but wrong answers.

6️⃣ Step-by-Step Method (Exam Strategy)

  1. Assume current directions (don’t worry if wrong)
  2. Apply KCL at junctions
  3. Apply KVL to independent loops
  4. Solve simultaneous equations
