🔌 Current Electricity – Stage 0 (Foundation)

Page 1: What is Electric Current? (Concept First)

1️⃣ Why do we study Current Electricity?

Electrostatics deals with charges at rest. Current Electricity begins when charges start moving.

  • Electrostatics → Energy stored
  • Current Electricity → Energy transfer

👉 Every real device (bulb, phone, motor, laptop) works because of current electricity.

2️⃣ What is Electric Current?

Electric Current (I) is defined as:

I = Charge Flow / Time
I = Q / t

  • Q = charge (Coulomb)
  • t = time (second)
  • Unit of current = Ampere (A)

1 Ampere means:

1 Coulomb of charge flows per second through a conductor

3️⃣ Direction of Current (VERY IMPORTANT)

  • By convention, current flows from positive to negative
  • In reality, electrons move from negative to positive

⚠️ JEE always uses conventional current direction, not electron direction.

4️⃣ Types of Current

Type Meaning Example
DC Constant direction Battery, Cell
AC Alternating direction Home electricity

👉 In this chapter, we mainly deal with DC (Direct Current).

5️⃣ Microscopic vs Macroscopic View

  • Macroscopic: Current, voltage, resistance
  • Microscopic: Electron motion, drift velocity

💡 IIT/JEE loves microscopic understanding.

6️⃣ Key Foundation Idea (Must Remember)

Current does NOT flow because of electrons alone.
👉 It flows because of an electric field inside the conductor.

7️⃣ What Comes Next?

  • Electric potential difference (Voltage)
  • Ohm’s Law (real meaning)
  • Resistance from atomic view
