Electrostatics – Stage 0 (Foundation)

Chapter 1: Electric Charges & Fields – Page 1

1. What is Electrostatics?

Electrostatics is the branch of physics that studies electric charges at rest and the fields they produce.

It answers three fundamental questions:

  • What is electric charge?
  • How do charges interact?
  • How is this interaction transmitted through space?

Important: Even though charges are at rest, the effects are not static. The influence spreads through space via electric fields.

2. Why Do We Need Electrostatics?

Electrostatics is the starting point of all electricity and magnetism.

  • Current electricity is moving charge
  • Magnetism arises from moving charges
  • Electromagnetic waves originate from accelerated charges

JEE Insight: If Electrostatics is weak, entire Class XII Physics collapses.

3. What is Electric Charge?

Electric charge is a fundamental property of matter responsible for electrical interactions.

Key Observations:

  • Charge causes attraction or repulsion
  • Charge exists independently of motion
  • Charge is conserved in all processes

Deep Thought: Mass causes gravity. Charge causes electromagnetism.

4. Two Types of Electric Charge

  • Positive Charge – conventionally assigned
  • Negative Charge – carried by electrons

Interaction Rule:

  • Like charges repel
  • Unlike charges attract

Exam Trap: Attraction/repulsion is not due to force directly, but due to electric field interaction.

5. Is Charge Continuous or Discrete?

Electric charge is quantized.

That means:

q = ± ne

  • e = 1.6 × 10−19 C
  • n = integer

JEE Concept: Fractional charges do NOT exist in isolation.

6. How Do Charges Interact Without Touching?

This question led to the most important idea in Electrostatics:

Electric Field

Charges do not act directly on each other. They create a condition in space called a field.

Core Foundation: Charge → creates Field → Field exerts Force

Stage 0 – Page 1 Takeaway

  • Electrostatics is the base of all EM physics
  • Charge is a fundamental conserved quantity
  • Forces act via fields, not direct contact
  • Understanding comes before formulas
