Electrostatics – Stage 2
Electric Charges & Fields – Page 9
1. One-Line Kill Methods (JEE Favourite)
These are shortcuts where no full solution is needed.
- Identical charges + symmetry → Net field = 0
- Closed surface → Use Gauss law directly
- Charge at midpoint → Forces cancel
Rule:
If symmetry exists → write answer in 10 seconds
2. Option Elimination Tricks (MCQ & MSQ)
Instead of solving, eliminate options using logic:
- Check dimensions
- Check sign of charge
- Check limiting cases
Example:
If q → 0, force must → 0
If option does not satisfy → eliminate
3. Direction-First Strategy
In electrostatics, direction matters more than magnitude.
- First decide direction of force
- Then calculate magnitude
Topper Habit:
Never write formula before drawing direction arrows
4. Electric Field vs Electric Force – Speed Rule
| Quantity | Depends On |
|---|---|
| Electric Field | Source charges only |
| Electric Force | Source + test charge |
Instant Answer Rule:
Change test charge → field same, force changes
5. Flux Questions – 5-Second Formula
Φ = (Net charge inside) / ε₀
- Ignore shape
- Ignore external charges
- Ignore position inside
JEE Trap:
Changing shape does NOT change flux
6. Heavy Calculation? Use Ratio Method
When two similar cases are compared:
- Do not calculate separately
- Take ratio directly
Example:
F₁/F₂ = (q₁/q₂) × (r₂²/r₁²)
7. Multi-Correct Survival Strategy
- Check each option independently
- Do not assume number of correct answers
- Extreme value testing works best
Golden Tip:
If one option is wrong, others may still be correct
8. Common JEE Speed Mistakes
- Solving fully when logic is enough
- Ignoring symmetry
- Plugging values too early
- Forgetting vector nature
Stage 2 – Page 9 Final Mindset
In JEE Advanced, the fastest solver is the one who thinks least but understands most.
