Lesson 7 – Momentum & Collisions

RECAP–2: Exam Execution, Problem Flow & Mental Checklist

This recap is written from the exam hall point of view. It tells students what to do, what to avoid, and how to think while solving momentum and collision problems under time pressure.

🔹 1. 10-Second Problem Reading Technique

Before touching pen:
✔ What is happening? (collision / explosion / rebound)
✔ How many bodies?
✔ Is surface smooth or rough?
✔ Any wall or ground involved?

Why? Wrong interpretation causes 80% of mistakes.

🔹 2. Universal Problem Flow (Follow This Order)

Step 1: Choose positive direction
Step 2: Write initial momenta
Step 3: Check external force
Step 4: Apply momentum conservation
Step 5: Apply e or energy only if valid
Step 6: Check direction of answer

Never jump directly to formulas.

🔹 3. Objective Question Handling Strategy

✔ First eliminate physically impossible options
✔ Check sign and magnitude
✔ Use extreme cases (e = 0, e = 1, m ≫ M)
✔ Calculate only if needed

Rule: Elimination > Calculation

🔹 4. Multi-Correct & IIT Advanced Safety Rules

✔ Verify each option independently
✔ One wrong tick = full negative
✔ If unsure about even one option → skip
✔ Never guess multi-correct

🔹 5. Explosion & COM Questions – How to Think

✔ Explosion = internal force only
✔ Total momentum conserved
✔ COM velocity unchanged
✔ Individual KE may increase or decrease

Mental line: “COM ignores internal drama.”

🧠 6. Top 10 Exam-Hall Mistakes (Avoid These)

❌ Ignoring direction
❌ Assuming KE conservation
❌ Mixing explosion & collision
❌ Forgetting wall/ground is external
❌ Panic due to length
❌ Solving backward
❌ Blind substitution
❌ Overconfidence
❌ Guessing multi-correct
❌ Skipping sign check

🏆 7. Final 5 Golden Exam Rules

✔ Momentum first, energy later
✔ Direction is part of answer
✔ COM is your shortcut
✔ Calm thinking beats fast math
✔ Accuracy protects rank

✅ Final Note to Students

This chapter is not about heavy formulas. It is about thinking clearly under pressure. If you follow this recap, momentum problems will become your strength, not fear.
