Stage 3 – Page 3
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) – Phase & Time Intelligence

1. What is Phase? (Conceptual Clarity)

In SHM, phase tells the state of motion of the particle at any instant.

For x = A sin(ωt + φ)
(ωt + φ) = Phase

  • Phase includes position, direction, and velocity
  • Same position ≠ same phase
  • Phase decides the entire motion

2. Phase Difference (Very Important for JEE)

Phase difference between two SHMs:

Δφ = ωΔt

Key meanings:

  • Δφ = π → opposite phase
  • Δφ = π/2 → quarter cycle difference
  • Δφ = 2π → same phase

Examiner Trick:
Same displacement but opposite velocities → phase difference = π

3. Same Position, Different Phase

At displacement x, particle passes:

  • Once while going forward
  • Once while coming back

✔ Position same
✘ Phase different
✔ Velocity sign changes

IIT Insight: Never judge phase only by position.

4. Time Taken Between Two Positions

Time calculation uses phase, not distance.

ωΔt = |θ₂ − θ₁|

Steps:

  1. Convert position to sinθ or cosθ
  2. Find corresponding angles
  3. Take correct quadrant
  4. Multiply by 1/ω

⚠ Same position can give TWO time answers

5. Velocity & Phase Relation

Velocity equation:

v = Aω cos(ωt + φ)

Phase Displacement Velocity
0 0 Maximum
π/2 Maximum 0
π 0 Maximum (opposite)

6. Acceleration & Phase

Acceleration equation:

a = −ω²x

  • Acceleration always opposite to displacement
  • Maximum at extreme positions
  • Zero at mean position

Velocity zero does NOT mean acceleration zero

7. Phase Traps in MCQs

  • Same x, same v magnitude ≠ same phase
  • Sign of velocity decides phase
  • Direction of motion is critical

Stage 3 – Page 3 Key Takeaways

✔ Phase represents the complete state of motion
✔ Use phase difference for time problems
✔ Same position can have different physics
