Stage 3 – Page 1
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) – Advanced Concept Linking

1. Why Stage 3 is Critical for IIT-JEE

Stage 3 focuses on thinking like IIT examiners. Here, concepts are not isolated — they are linked with calculus, energy, graphs, and limiting cases.

  • Questions look simple but hide deep logic
  • Multiple concepts operate simultaneously
  • Graph + equation + physical sense are tested together

2. SHM as a Differential Equation

The heart of SHM lies in the equation:

d²x/dt² = −ω²x

Key understanding:

  • Acceleration ∝ displacement
  • Acceleration always towards mean position
  • This equation defines SHM — not sine or cosine

Important: Sine/cosine are only solutions, not the definition.

3. Energy Perspective (Very Important)

Total Energy in SHM:

E = (1/2)kA² = constant

Position Kinetic Energy Potential Energy
Mean Position Maximum Zero
Extreme Position Zero Maximum
Any x ½k(A² − x²) ½kx²

4. Velocity–Displacement Relation (JEE Favourite)

Instead of time equations, use:

v² = ω²(A² − x²)

Why examiners love this:

  • No time involved
  • Quick elimination of options
  • Best for objective questions

5. Graphical Intelligence (Must)

  • x–t graph → slope = velocity
  • v–t graph → slope = acceleration
  • a–x graph → straight line with negative slope

IIT Trick: If a–x graph is not linear with negative slope → NOT SHM.

6. Examiner’s Trap (Read Carefully)

  • Maximum velocity ≠ maximum acceleration
  • Zero velocity does NOT mean zero acceleration
  • Time period independent of amplitude (ideal SHM)

Stage 3 – Page 1 Takeaway

✔ Think in equations, not formulas
✔ Use energy whenever time is missing
✔ Always visualize motion graphically
