Properties of Matter – Stage 3 (Page 1)

Advanced Problems • PYQ Logic • IIT Thinking Mode

1. How IIT Thinks (Very Important)

IIT does NOT test formulas here. It tests:

  • Physical interpretation
  • Dimensional dominance
  • Hidden assumptions
  • Extreme cases

Rule:
If a question looks simple → it is hiding a condition.

2. PYQ-Type Question (Conceptual)

Question:

Two wires of same material but different lengths and radii are stretched by the same force. Which quantity is same?

  • Stress
  • Strain
  • Elongation
  • Increase in length per unit length

Analysis:

  • Stress = F/A → different
  • Strain = ΔL/L = σ/Y → same
  • Elongation → depends on L & A

Correct: Strain

3. IIT Extreme Case Trick

If Poisson’s ratio μ → 0.5

  • Material becomes incompressible
  • Bulk modulus → ∞
  • Volume change → zero

Application:
Used to kill 2 options instantly in JEE Advanced.

4. Multi-Concept Question (Stress + Temperature)

Situation:

A rod is fixed between two rigid walls and temperature is increased.

Key Ideas:

  • Thermal strain wants to expand
  • Constraint produces stress
  • No change in length

Stress developed:

σ = Y α ΔT

Trap:
Many students wrongly add mechanical strain.

5. PYQ Elimination Technique

Eliminate option if:

  • Depends on length for material property
  • Uses rigidity for liquid
  • Mentions stress depends on length
  • Claims μ > 0.5

Advanced Tip:
One wrong word = full option wrong.

6. IIT Favourite Graph Logic

Stress vs Strain graph:

  • Slope in elastic region = Young’s modulus
  • Area under curve = energy stored per unit volume
  • Breaking point ≠ elastic limit

Graph ≠ Decoration
Every slope & area has meaning.

Stage 3 – Mindset Shift

  • Stop calculating blindly
  • Think physically first
  • Dimensions before algebra
  • Extremes before solving
