Properties of Matter – Stage 3 (Page 3)
JEE Advanced Tough PYQs • Multi-Step Logic • Examiner Traps
1. Multi-Rod System (Different Materials + Geometry)
PYQ Structure:
- Two or three rods connected
- Different Young’s moduli
- System in equilibrium
IIT Step-wise Thinking:
- Identify series or parallel
- Apply same force or same elongation condition
- Use Hooke’s law individually
- Combine results
Trap:
Most students mix series & parallel logic together.
2. PYQ: Variable Cross-Section Rod
Rod whose area varies with length: A = A₀(1 + kx)
Correct Method:
- Take small element dx
- Find dL = (F dx)/(A Y)
- Integrate from 0 to L
Advanced Tip:
Never use average area in JEE Advanced.
3. Elastic Energy Density – Conceptual PYQ
Energy per unit volume stored in a stretched wire.
Correct Expression:
u = (1/2) × stress × strain
Why IIT asks this:
- Tests stress–strain curve understanding
- Eliminates formula-memorization students
4. Breaking Stress vs Breaking Load
Common Confusion:
- Breaking stress → material property
- Breaking force → geometry dependent
IIT Trap:
Changing radius changes breaking load, not breaking stress.
5. Thermal + Elastic Combined PYQ
Rod fixed between walls, force applied, temperature changed.
Correct Order:
- Calculate free thermal strain
- Apply constraint condition
- Find net strain = 0
- Compute induced stress
Golden Rule:
Constraints decide stress, not temperature alone.
6. Stress–Strain Curve PYQ (Deep)
- Elastic limit ≠ proportional limit
- Plastic region → permanent set
- Area under curve → energy absorbed
Examiner Psychology:
Questions hide elastic limit subtly on graphs.
7. Dimensional + Conceptual PYQs
- Young’s modulus → ML⁻¹T⁻²
- Strain → dimensionless
- Poisson’s ratio → pure number
Shortcut:
Anything dimensionless never depends on unit system.
IIT Master Checklist (Stage 3)
- Always separate material vs geometry
- Check constraint conditions
- Series ≠ Parallel
- Stress ≠ Force
- Strain ≠ Elongation
