Mean Speed, Average Speed & Time Analysis in SHM

Speed vs Velocity (Revision)

  • Speed → scalar (magnitude only)
  • Velocity → vector (magnitude + direction)
In SHM, average velocity may be zero but average speed is never zero.

Mean Speed in SHM

Mean speed = Total distance / Total time

Mean speed over one complete oscillation:
= (4A) / T = (2ωA) / π
  • Distance in one oscillation = 4A
  • Time = T

Mean Speed in Half Oscillation

Distance = 2A
Time = T/2
Mean speed = (4A) / T

Same as full oscillation!


Mean Speed in Quarter Oscillation

Distance = A
Time = T/4
Mean speed = (4A) / T

IIT Trap: Mean speed remains same for quarter, half, full oscillation


Average Speed in SHM

Average speed depends on the chosen time interval.

Average speed ≠ Mean speed (generally)
  • Needs integration or symmetry
  • Asked in advanced problems

Mean Velocity in SHM

Over complete oscillation → 0

Because net displacement = 0


Time Taken to Move from Mean to Displacement x

t = (1/ω) sin⁻¹ (x / A)
  • Only valid when starting from mean
  • Direction must be specified

Time Between Two Positions x₁ and x₂

t = (1/ω) [ sin⁻¹(x₂/A) − sin⁻¹(x₁/A) ]

IIT Trap #3 – Wrong Time Interval

  • sin⁻¹ gives principal value only
  • Particle may cross same point multiple times
Always visualize motion direction
