IIT PHASE–2 (Advanced) – PART V
Traps, Counter-Strategies & Exam Control
This section exposes advanced IIT traps used to confuse even well-prepared students. Each trap is followed by a clear counter-strategy used by IIT toppers.
Trap 1: “Energy is Conserved” Assumption
How IIT traps:
- Mentions friction subtly
- Gives smooth + rough regions together
Why students fail:
They blindly apply energy conservation.
Counter-Strategy:
Use energy balance: Initial Energy − Energy lost = Final Energy
Trap 2: Using F = ma Where Energy is Enough
IIT trick:
- Question looks force-based
- Acceleration is not constant
Correct response:
If time is not asked → avoid F = ma.
Topper rule: Eliminate time → eliminate acceleration.
Trap 3: Constant Speed Misinterpretation
Trap statement:
“Body moves with constant speed…”
Student mistake:
Assuming no work is done by any force.
Reality:
- Net work = 0
- Individual forces may do work
Trap 4: Power vs Work Confusion
IIT trick:
Asks power when displacement is large.
Correct thinking:
Instantaneous power depends only on velocity:
P = F · v
Golden check: If v = 0 → Power = 0 (even if force exists)
Trap 5: Mass as a Distraction
IIT behaviour:
- Gives large mass values
- Encourages heavy calculations
Counter-strategy:
Cancel mass symbolically before numbers.
Reality: Many energy results are mass-independent.
Trap 6: Graph Fear
IIT trick:
Replace equations with graphs.
Topper response:
- Area under F–x → Work
- Slope of PE–x → Force
Graph = picture of physics
Trap 7: Over-Solving Simple Problems
Student mistake:
Solving fully when only comparison is needed.
Counter-strategy:
Use proportional reasoning.
Example: v doubles → KE becomes 4 times.
Trap 8: Emotional Panic in Tough Problems
IIT reality:
Some problems are intentionally time-consuming.
Topper discipline:
- Skip temporarily
- Return later
- Protect accuracy
Phase–2 Control Rules (Memorize)
- Energy first, force second
- Never rush the first equation
- Ask “what is really changing?”
- Accuracy > attempts
“IIT is defeated by calm logic, not speed.”
