IIT PHASE–1 (Foundation) – PART IV Work, Energy and Power

This part trains students to recognize IIT question archetypes and immediately select the correct energy framework. Most IIT errors occur not due to lack of knowledge, but due to wrong problem classification.


1. IIT Question Archetype–1: “Find Speed at a Point”

These questions ask speed at a certain position without giving time.

Typical wording:

  • Find the speed at point B
  • Find velocity just before hitting ground
  • Find speed after moving some distance

Correct approach:

  • Ignore time
  • Apply energy conservation OR work–energy theorem

Core equation:
Initial KE + Initial PE + Work (non-conservative) = Final KE + Final PE

Trap: Using equations of motion unnecessarily.


2. IIT Question Archetype–2: “Compare Speeds / Energies”

These questions test understanding of energy dependence.

Common forms:

  • Compare speeds on different paths
  • Compare kinetic energies at two points
  • Which body moves faster?

Decision logic:

  • If only gravity acts → depends only on height
  • If friction present → path length matters

Key insight: Same height ≠ same speed when friction exists.


3. IIT Question Archetype–3: “Stopping Distance / Minimum Distance”

Stopping distance problems are common and deceptive.

Typical wording:

  • Find distance before stopping
  • How far will the body move?

Correct framework:

  • Initial KE = Work done by resistive forces

Equation:
½ mv² = Fs

Important result: Mass often cancels → distance independent of mass.


4. IIT Question Archetype–4: “Variable Force / Graph Based”

These problems test calculus + energy thinking.

Typical forms:

  • Force given as function of x
  • Graph of F vs x given
  • Find work done or speed

Rules:

  • Work = area under F–x graph
  • Change in KE = work done

Trap: Trying to find acceleration explicitly.


5. IIT Question Archetype–5: “Power at an Instant”

These questions test instantaneous understanding.

Common forms:

  • Find power at a point
  • Find power at maximum speed

Correct relation:

  • P = F · v

Trap: Using work/time blindly instead of instantaneous power.


6. Mixed-Force Systems (Gravity + Friction)

IIT combines conservative and non-conservative forces.

Correct equation:

  • Initial KE + Initial PE − Work by friction = Final KE + Final PE

Insight: Energy lost is always equal to work done by friction.


7. Eliminating Variables – IIT Style

IIT loves elimination.

Elimination targets:

  • Time
  • Acceleration
  • Normal reaction

Why?

  • Reduces algebra
  • Reduces mistakes
  • Highlights physics

8. Transition Skill: From Phase–1 to Phase–2

Before entering Phase–2, students must master:

  • Energy balance equations
  • Work calculation clarity
  • Graph interpretation
  • Trap identification

Phase–2 starts when: You recognize problem type within 10 seconds.

  • Can classify question type instantly
  • Can choose energy vs force correctly
  • Can ignore unnecessary variables
  • Can explain energy flow verbally
