IIT PHASE–1 (Foundation) – PART IX Solution Methods, Tricks & Tips

This section focuses on how to actually solve IIT problems efficiently. These are not shortcuts, but method-level tricks used by toppers to reduce time and avoid mistakes.

1. Method–1: Energy Balance Sheet Method

Instead of writing long equations, use an energy balance format.

Standard structure:

  • Initial Kinetic Energy
  • Initial Potential Energy
  • Energy Added (external work)
  • Energy Lost (friction, resistance)
  • Final Kinetic Energy
  • Final Potential Energy

General equation:

Initial Energy + Energy Added − Energy Lost = Final Energy

Why this works: No energy term is forgotten → high accuracy.

2. Method–2: Height First, Everything Later

Whenever gravity is involved, convert motion into height change first.

Key idea:

  • Speed depends on height, not path
  • Angle, shape, and time often irrelevant

Trick: If height is same → speed is same (no friction).

3. Method–3: Stopping Distance Shortcut

Stopping problems can be solved in one line.

Core idea:

Initial KE = Work done by stopping force

Formula:

½ mv² = Fs

Tip: Cancel mass symbolically before substituting numbers.

4. Method–4: Variable Force → Area Thinking

For variable force, forget acceleration.

Rules:

  • Work = ∫ F dx
  • Area under F–x graph = work done

Trick: Convert graph shapes into geometric areas.

5. Method–5: Power Problems (Instant Check)

Always use instantaneous relation.

Formula:

P = F · v

Fast checks:

  • v = 0 → P = 0
  • F ⟂ v → P = 0

6. Trick–1: Eliminate Time Aggressively

Time creates algebra and errors.

Topper rule:

  • If time is not asked → remove it
  • Energy method almost always removes time

7. Trick–2: Ratio Thinking Instead of Numbers

Many IIT questions ask comparison.

Example:

  • Velocity doubled → KE becomes 4 times

Tip: Do not calculate absolute values if ratio is enough.

8. Accuracy Tip: Units & Limits

Before finalizing answer:

  • Check units
  • Check extreme cases
  • Check physical sense

This step saves negative marking.
