Lesson 5 – Work, Energy and Power EXAM ORIENTATION (Intermediate Focus)
This section explains how this chapter appears in examinations, what examiners expect, and how students should write answers to score maximum marks in Intermediate Board Exams.
1. Weightage & Importance
- This chapter carries medium to high weightage in Intermediate exams.
- At least 1 long answer OR 2 short answers are expected.
- Numerical problems are very common.
- Direct formula-based questions are frequently asked.
2. Types of Questions Asked
(A) Very Short Answer Questions (1 Mark)
- Define work.
- What is the SI unit of energy?
- What is zero work?
- Write the formula for kinetic energy.
Exam Tip: Write definitions exactly as in textbook. One-line precision is important.
(B) Short Answer Questions (2–3 Marks)
- Distinguish between positive and negative work.
- State and explain work–energy theorem.
- Explain conservative and non-conservative forces.
- Derive expression for kinetic energy.
Exam Tip: Use headings + formulas + small explanation. Neat presentation fetches extra impression marks.
(C) Long Answer Questions (4–5 Marks)
- Explain work, energy and power with examples.
- Derive work–energy theorem.
- Explain different types of energy.
- Explain power and its types with expressions.
Exam Tip: Always follow this structure:
- Definition
- Formula / Law
- Derivation (if asked)
- Example
3. Numerical Problems – How They Appear
Numericals are generally based on:
- Kinetic energy calculation
- Work done by force
- Power of moving body
- Change in energy
Commonly used formulas:
- Kinetic Energy = ½ mv²
- Work = Fs cosθ
- Power = Work / Time
- Power = Fv
Exam Tip: Write Given → Required → Formula → Substitution → Answer. Even if final answer is wrong, partial marks are awarded.
4. Diagrams – Are They Required?
- Diagrams are not mandatory for every question.
- For work done by force or spring force, simple diagram helps.
- Neat diagrams increase clarity and examiner confidence.
5. Common Mistakes Students Make
- Confusing work with effort
- Wrong sign for work (positive/negative)
- Forgetting cosθ in work formula
- Not converting units properly
- Skipping steps in numericals
6. Examiner’s Expectation
- Concept clarity over memorization
- Correct formulas
- Logical steps
- Neat handwriting and proper spacing
Final Board Exam Strategy
✔ Revise formulas daily
✔ Practice at least 10 numericals
✔ Learn derivations step by step
✔ Never leave a question blank
