Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)

Recap & Study Methods – Part 1 (JEE Advanced Focus)

1️⃣ CORE CONCEPT RECAP (WHAT REALLY MATTERS)

  • Restoring force ∝ displacement and always opposite in direction
  • Acceleration decides nature of motion, not velocity
  • Energy approach is safest for most JEE problems
  • Time-based problems are always phase-based
  • Graphs carry hidden answers (slope & curvature)

Golden Rule:
If restoring force is not linear → motion is NOT SHM.

2️⃣ FORMULA MEMORY STRATEGY (NO ROTE LEARNING)

Never memorize formulas separately. Memorize them as families.

  • x → v → a (derivative chain)
  • Energy: KE + PE = constant
  • Max values at mean / extreme positions
  • ω connects everything (time, speed, acceleration)

Topper Trick:
If you forget a formula, derive it using energy in 10 seconds.

3️⃣ QUESTION IDENTIFICATION SKILL

Before solving, ask only one question:

“Is this a TIME problem, ENERGY problem, or GRAPH problem?”

  • Time → Phase angle method
  • Speed / position → Energy conservation
  • Graph → Understand slope & intercept

JEE Trap:
Starting calculation before identifying question type.

4️⃣ HOW TOPPERS SOLVE IN EXAM (MENTAL FLOW)

  1. Read question slowly (5–10 seconds)
  2. Mark known quantities mentally
  3. Decide method (NO writing yet)
  4. Use symmetry / elimination if possible
  5. Calculate only if unavoidable

Exam Truth:
JEE is won by thinking speed, not writing speed.

5️⃣ DAILY STUDY PLAN FOR SHM

  • Morning: Concept + graphs (30–40 min)
  • Afternoon: Objective questions (20–30)
  • Evening: PYQs + mistake analysis
  • Night: Formula recall + 5 mental questions

Consistency Rule:
Short daily revision beats long weekend study.

FINAL MESSAGE (PART 1)

If you follow this method:

  • Fear of SHM disappears
  • Time per question reduces
  • Accuracy increases sharply
  • Advanced questions feel manageable
