Gravitation – Phase 3 Exam Mastery (FINAL)
Page 4E • Methods • Shortcuts • Examiner Mindset • Topper Thinking
This page is the mental operating system for solving any Gravitation problem in Boards, JEE Main, or JEE Advanced.
METHOD–1: Force-Based vs Energy-Based Decision
Before solving, ask:
- Is motion changing continuously? → Use force
- Is only initial & final state needed? → Use energy
- Is orbit involved? → Use centripetal + energy
Golden Rule: Never mix force and energy unless required.
METHOD–2: Orbit Classification by Energy
- E < 0 → Bound (circle / ellipse)
- E = 0 → Parabolic escape
- E > 0 → Hyperbolic escape
Shortcut: Sign of energy decides the path.
METHOD–3: Minimum Formula Strategy
These 5 formulas solve 90% problems:
- v = √(GM/r)
- E = −GMm / (2r)
- ve = √(2GM/r)
- T² ∝ r³
- g ∝ 1/r²
Topper Habit: Recall, don’t derive.
METHOD–4: Direction of Velocity Change Trick
- Tangential impulse → changes energy
- Radial impulse → changes shape
- No impulse → orbit unchanged
IIT Favourite Trap: Direction matters more than magnitude.
METHOD–5: Equipotential Thinking
On a spherical surface:
- Potential = constant
- Work done = 0
- Force ≠ 0
Trap: Zero work does not mean zero force.
METHOD–6: g-Variation Master Map
- Inside Earth → linear decrease
- At surface → maximum
- Outside Earth → inverse square
Graph-based MCQs solved instantly
METHOD–7: Limiting Case Test (Error Killer)
Always ask:
- What if r → ∞?
- What if h = 0?
- What if velocity = orbital?
One check can save 4 marks
EXAMINER MINDSET – HOW QUESTIONS ARE SET
- Confuse speed with velocity
- Mix field & potential
- Hide radius in wording
- Test sign of energy
- Exploit over-calculation
Examiner Goal: Not to test memory — to test clarity.
TOPPER THINKING LOOP (IN EXAM)
- Classify problem (5 seconds)
- Select method (5 seconds)
- Recall formula (no derivation)
- Solve minimally
- Check limiting case
This loop separates AIR < 500
HOW TO STUDY GRAVITATION (FINAL GUIDE)
- Revise formulas daily (5 minutes)
- Solve 10 MCQs with timer
- Analyze wrong answers deeply
- Revise traps weekly
- Never skip diagrams
Important: Solving fewer questions deeply beats solving many blindly.
