Gravitation – Higher Order Thinking Questions
Stage 2 • Page 4 • Conceptual & Assertion–Reason
Conceptual Question 1
Q: Why does a stone fall faster than a feather in air but both fall together in vacuum?
Answer:
In air, a feather experiences greater air resistance due to its large surface area, which slows its fall. In vacuum, there is no air resistance, so both stone and feather fall with the same acceleration due to gravity.
Conceptual Question 2
Q: Can acceleration due to gravity be zero at the centre of Earth? Explain.
Answer:
Yes. At the centre of Earth, gravitational forces from all directions cancel each other, resulting in zero net gravitational force. Hence, acceleration due to gravity becomes zero.
Conceptual Question 3
Q: Why does weight of a body change but mass remains constant?
Answer:
Mass is the amount of matter in a body and is independent of location. Weight depends on acceleration due to gravity (W = mg), which varies from place to place. Therefore, weight changes but mass remains constant.
Assertion–Reason Question 1
Assertion (A): Weight of a body decreases on the Moon.
Reason (R): Acceleration due to gravity on the Moon is less than that on Earth.
Correct Option:
Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
Assertion–Reason Question 2
Assertion (A): Gravitational force between two bodies decreases when distance between them increases.
Reason (R): Gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of distance.
Correct Option:
Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
Assertion–Reason Question 3
Assertion (A): Escape velocity of Earth is greater than escape velocity of Moon.
Reason (R): Earth has greater mass and radius compared to the Moon.
Correct Option:
Both A and R are true, but R is only partially correct because escape velocity depends on both mass and radius.
HOTS Question
Q: If Earth suddenly stops rotating, what happens to the weight of objects at the equator?
Answer:
At present, rotation of Earth reduces effective weight at the equator due to centrifugal force. If Earth stops rotating, centrifugal force becomes zero, so weight of objects at the equator increases.
Board Exam Writing Tips
