Gravitation – Phase 3 Exam Mastery
Page 1 • How IIT/JEE Toppers Think Before Solving
This page is not about formulas. It is about how a topper’s brain works in the first 5–10 seconds after seeing a Gravitation question.
STEP 1: Identify the NATURE of the Problem
The first decision toppers make is:
- Is it force-based?
- Is it energy-based?
- Is it orbital motion?
- Is it conceptual (logic)?
Golden Rule:
If motion is circular → think centripetal force & energy
If motion is falling → think force & acceleration
STEP 2: Ask the RIGHT QUESTION
Before writing equations, toppers ask:
- What is conserved here?
- Is angular momentum conserved?
- Is energy conserved?
- Is nothing conserved?
Examiner Trick:
Many problems are solved by identifying what is NOT conserved.
STEP 3: Decide ORBIT TYPE Instantly
Toppers instantly classify orbits:
- Circular orbit
- Elliptical orbit
- Escape trajectory
- Free fall
Key Insight:
Any sudden change in velocity → orbit becomes elliptical
STEP 4: Visualize BEFORE Solving
Toppers always create a mental diagram:
- Direction of velocity
- Direction of force
- Center of attraction
- Reference axis
Visualization beats memorization
STEP 5: Choose MINIMUM Equations
Toppers never write long derivations unless needed. They use:
- v = √(GM/r)
- E = −GMm / (2r)
- T² ∝ r³
- vescape = √(2GM/r)
Rule: If solution is getting lengthy → wrong approach.
STEP 6: Check LIMITING CASES
Before final answer, toppers check:
- What if r → ∞?
- What if h = 0?
- Does answer match physical sense?
Limiting case = instant error detector
EXAMINER VS TOPPER MINDSET
| Average Student | Topper |
|---|---|
| Searches formula | Searches concept |
| Calculates first | Thinks first |
| Panics on length | Simplifies problem |
FINAL TAKEAWAY (Must Remember)
Gravitation is not difficult. It becomes difficult only when thinking is weak.
