Worked IIT/JEE Style Examples – Thinking Before Formula

How toppers convert concepts into marks

How to Read These Examples

  • Do NOT jump to solution
  • Read thinking flow carefully
  • Observe why a method is chosen
Goal: Learn the approach, not just the answer.

Example 1: Block on Smooth Surface

Problem:
A block of mass m is placed on a smooth horizontal surface. A constant force F is applied. Find the velocity after time t.

Thinking Flow

  • Surface is smooth → no friction
  • Single force → constant acceleration
  • Motion is straight line

Principle Used

Newton’s Second Law

Solution

Acceleration,
a = F / m

Using v = u + at (u = 0),

v = (F/m) t

IIT Insight: No energy method needed — force is constant and simple.

Example 2: Particle Thrown Upwards

Problem:
A particle is thrown vertically upward with speed u. Find the maximum height reached.

Thinking Flow

  • Only gravity acts
  • Speed becomes zero at top
  • No need of time

Best Principle

Energy Conservation (simpler than equations)

Solution

Initial KE = (1/2) m u²
Final KE = 0
Gain in PE = m g h

(1/2) m u² = m g h

h = u² / (2g)

Common Mistake: Using equations unnecessarily and making sign errors.

Example 3: SHM Restoring Force

Problem:
A particle executes SHM with restoring force F = −kx. Find its time period.

Thinking Flow

  • Force proportional to displacement
  • Negative sign → restoring nature
  • Matches SHM definition

Comparison Method

For SHM:
F = −mω²x

Given:
F = −kx

Comparing,

mω² = k

ω = √(k/m)

T = 2π √(m/k)

Toppers’ Trick: Never derive again — compare standard forms.

Mindset You Must Develop

  • One problem → multiple approaches
  • Choose shortest safe path
  • Physics > Mathematics

Practice Task (Do Before Page-8)

  1. Solve same problems using another method
  2. Ask: “Why this method works?”
  3. Write mistakes in a separate notebook
Rule: If you can explain a solution in words, you own the concept.
