LESSON–3 : MOTION IN A PLANE

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS – 9 (PART–5)
FINAL RECAP – FORMULAS • TRICKS • METHODS • EXAMINER VIEW

📌 1. COMPLETE FORMULA RECAP (MUST MEMORIZE)

🔹 Vector Basics

  • Magnitude: |A| = √(Ax² + Ay²)
  • Angle: tanθ = Ay / Ax
  • Dot product: A·B = ABcosθ

🔹 Projectile Motion

  • Time of flight: T = (2u sinθ) / g
  • Maximum height: H = (u² sin²θ) / (2g)
  • Range: R = (u² sin2θ) / g
  • Horizontal velocity: ux = u cosθ (constant)
  • Vertical velocity: uy = u sinθ − gt

🔹 Horizontal Projection

  • Time of fall: t = √(2h / g)
  • Horizontal distance: x = ut

🔹 Relative Velocity

  • Same direction: v = v₁ − v₂
  • Opposite direction: v = v₁ + v₂
  • Perpendicular: v = √(v₁² + v₂²)

🎯 2. ALL IMPORTANT TRICKS (TOPPER SECRETS)

  • Same height → same speed (energy rule)
  • Complementary angles → same range
  • Highest point → vy = 0, NOT acceleration
  • Horizontal motion does NOT affect time of fall
  • Speed at projection = speed at landing (same level)
  • (a, b) ⟂ (b, −a)
  • Perpendicular velocities → Pythagoras directly

🧠 3. METHOD SELECTION TABLE (MOST IMPORTANT)

Question Type Best Method
Speed at height Energy conservation
Time of fall Vertical motion only
Range comparison Symmetry / sin2θ
Relative velocity Vector subtraction / geometry
Direction of velocity Component method

✍️ 4. PERFECT PROBLEM SOLVING PROCEDURE

  1. Read the question twice
  2. Draw a rough diagram (even for MCQ)
  3. Resolve motion into x and y components
  4. Decide the fastest method (table above)
  5. Solve neatly step-by-step
  6. Check units and physical meaning

👀 5. EXAMINER VIEW (VERY VERY IMPORTANT)

What examiner expects:

  • Correct method, not long calculation
  • Clear logic and correct formula
  • Neat steps and proper symbols
  • No wrong assumptions (like a = 0)

Common mistakes examiner punishes:

  • Forgetting acceleration at highest point
  • Mixing x and y equations
  • Using wrong method (time instead of energy)
  • Skipping diagrams

🏆 FINAL TOPPER ADVICE

If you remember:
✔ Formulas ✔ Tricks ✔ Method selection ✔ Examiner mindset

Motion in a Plane becomes a GUARANTEED SCORING CHAPTER in Intermediate, JEE Main & JEE Advanced.
