🥇 Kinetic Theory of Gases – Stage 2 (Page 8)

This is a GOLD PAGE — designed to protect you from negative marking and help you out-think the examiner in JEE Advanced.

1️⃣ Most Dangerous Trap: Speed vs Energy

Trap Statement: “If speed doubles, kinetic energy doubles.”

❌ WRONG

Kinetic Energy ∝ v²
If speed doubles → KE becomes 4 times

⚠ Examiner uses this trap very frequently.

2️⃣ Temperature vs Pressure Trap

Question Pattern: Gas heated → what happens to pressure?

✔ If volume constant → pressure increases
✔ If pressure constant → volume increases
❌ If conditions not specified → DO NOT ASSUME

🔥 Examiner punishes blind assumptions.

3️⃣ Maxwell Distribution – Concept Trap

Key Facts:

  • Most probable speed < Average speed < RMS speed
  • All molecules do NOT have same speed
  • Distribution shifts right with temperature

✔ Any option claiming “same speed” is automatically false.

4️⃣ PYQ Pattern: Mass Comparison

Question: At same temperature, which gas moves fastest?

v ∝ 1 / √M

Answer: Gas with lowest molar mass

💡 Trick: Never calculate unless needed — compare masses only.

5️⃣ Mean Free Path – Examiner Psychology

Mean Free Path increases when:

  • Density decreases
  • Pressure decreases
  • Temperature increases (at constant pressure)

❌ Many students wrongly choose “increase in molecular size”.

6️⃣ Collision vs Pressure Trap

Important:

  • More collisions ≠ always more pressure
  • Pressure depends on momentum transfer
  • Speed matters more than collision count

✔ High-speed fewer collisions can produce more pressure.

7️⃣ Integer-Type Shortcut

Q. Temperature doubled → rms speed becomes?

v ∝ √T → √2 times

Answer: √2 (≈1.414)

✔ Do NOT write 2 — very common error.

8️⃣ Multi-Correct Safety Rules 🛡

  • If option says “all molecules” → suspect it
  • If condition missing → re-read question
  • If temperature same → KE same (independent of gas)
  • If speed mentioned → check square relation

9️⃣ One-Line Killer Facts

  • Average KE depends only on temperature
  • Pressure is a wall-effect phenomenon
  • Gas laws are macroscopic outcomes of microscopic motion
