STAGE B – Page 3

Thermodynamics: Advanced Problem-Solving Logic

How IIT expects you to THINK, not calculate

🧠 CORE IIT MINDSET

  • Thermodynamics is logic > math
  • Before formula → identify process
  • Before calculation → check 2nd law

Golden Rule: If logic is wrong, numbers won’t save you.

🔍 STEP-1: Identify the Process (Most Critical)

  • Constant T → Isothermal
  • Q = 0 → Adiabatic
  • V constant → Isochoric
  • P constant → Isobaric

IIT Trick: They never name the process directly.

🔍 STEP-2: Decide the Dominant Law

  • Temperature change? → First Law
  • Efficiency / possibility? → Second Law
  • Path question? → Work integral

Shortcut: Don’t mix laws unnecessarily.

🔍 STEP-3: Predict the Result BEFORE Solving

  • Expansion → T usually drops (adiabatic)
  • Compression → Work negative
  • Heat absorbed → Entropy increases

IIT Filter: Eliminate options violating intuition.

⚙️ SMART FORMULA SELECTION

  • Never start with a formula list
  • Use minimal equation needed
  • Check limiting cases

Example: If T constant → ΔU = 0 (no need to calculate).

📉 GRAPH-BASED QUESTIONS (High-Scoring)

  • PV graph → area = work
  • TS graph → area = heat
  • Same endpoints ≠ same work

Shortcut: Visual reasoning beats algebra.

🔥 ENGINE & REFRIGERATOR LOGIC

  • Efficiency depends on reservoir temperatures
  • No engine beats Carnot
  • COP can be > 1

IIT Trap: Mixing efficiency with COP.

⏳ REVERSIBLE vs IRREVERSIBLE IDENTIFICATION

  • Slow + equilibrium → Reversible
  • Sudden expansion → Irreversible
  • Friction → Always irreversible

Key: Entropy generation exists only in irreversible processes.

🧮 CALCULATION CONTROL TECHNIQUE

  • Use ratios instead of values
  • Avoid substituting constants early
  • Cancel terms mentally

IIT Style: Long calculation = wrong approach.

✅ FINAL IIT CHECKLIST (Before Marking Answer)

  • Units consistent?
  • Sign convention correct?
  • Second law satisfied?
  • Physical sense exists?
