Entropy explains direction of natural processes and why some processes are irreversible.
1️⃣ What is Entropy?
Entropy (S) is a thermodynamic state function that measures:
✔ Disorder of a system
✔ Energy unavailable for work
✔ Disorder of a system
✔ Energy unavailable for work
Entropy change depends only on initial and final states, not on path.
2️⃣ Definition of Entropy Change
For a reversible process:
dS = δQrev / T
dS = δQrev / T
⚠ Heat must be taken for a reversible path, even if actual process is irreversible.
3️⃣ Entropy Change of Universe
ΔSuniverse = ΔSsystem + ΔSsurroundings
- ΔSuniverse = 0 → Reversible process
- ΔSuniverse > 0 → Irreversible process
- ΔSuniverse < 0 → Impossible process
4️⃣ Clausius Inequality
∮ (δQ / T) ≤ 0
Meaning:
- = 0 → Reversible cyclic process
- < 0 → Irreversible cyclic process
5️⃣ Entropy Change in Common Processes
Isothermal process:
ΔS = Q / T
ΔS = Q / T
Adiabatic reversible:
ΔS = 0
ΔS = 0
Free expansion:
ΔS > 0
ΔS > 0
6️⃣ Entropy & Irreversibility
Causes of irreversibility:
- Friction
- Sudden expansion
- Heat transfer with finite temperature difference
- Viscosity
All irreversible processes increase entropy of universe.
7️⃣ Physical Meaning (JEE Favorite)
Nature always moves toward a state of:
✔ Maximum entropy ✔ Maximum probability ✔ Minimum available energy
✔ Maximum entropy ✔ Maximum probability ✔ Minimum available energy
8️⃣ Ranker-Level Traps
- Using δQ instead of δQrev
- Thinking entropy always increases for system (it may decrease)
- Forgetting surroundings entropy
- Confusing adiabatic with zero entropy change
9️⃣ One-Line Exam Memory
Reversible → ΔSuniverse = 0
Irreversible → ΔSuniverse > 0
Impossible → ΔSuniverse < 0
Irreversible → ΔSuniverse > 0
Impossible → ΔSuniverse < 0
